A beautiful Cocker Spaniel, Daisy Mae is even more adorable resting amidst the Daisies as if she'd been playing and just plopped down right on top of the flowers.  It was actually Daisy Mae's mom who suggested adding the Daisies, and I was absolutely delighted!   It was a joy painting her long, luxurious whiet fur as well as the rich shades of brown, particularly where it's wavy on her ears and forehead.  Quite a beauty and a charmer!

I'm tempted to entitle this portrait "Catnap". Darling Suki lives with Comet, shown below. Being a cat lover myself and having three at the moment, I am quite familiar with the charm of seeing a kitty snuggled up in a cozy ball, and they find the most adorable places to nap.  So it was especially fun painting Suki curled up and Comet with his big, excited eyes. just as we see our own cats so often.

Introducing Harry Harrington a.k.a. HRH Prince of Long Beach. Harry is a regal pup who always brings a smile to everyone he meets...and he’s met a lot of folks during his travels from New York to Boston to San Francisco to Florida. He’s not only traveled more than most Westies, but has become quite the socialite meeting an endless list of celebrities as well. Here in this larger oil portrait painted nearly lifesize, I tried to capture his personality while Harry enjoyed a particularly fun day at the shore! Don’t you just love his little footprints and claw marks in the cool, wet sand? A cheerful painting to commemorate a special day.

You’ll no doubt recall some other bird portraits I’ve painted, all of which are for one client who delights in their exquisite plumage, beautiful song and sweet, or sometimes in the case of her Parrots, entertaining dispositions -- seems her girls are always up to something! However, these two darling little Zebra Finches have such sweet dispositions which I really tried to capture in this intricate portrait of the happy couple nestling together in an exquisite crystal chandelier. The whimsical title came to me while I painted, as is often the case.

Josephine is sitting pretty in her egg shaped wicker nest lined with scraps of newspaper and other odds and ends she’s gathered. Tilly is strikingly beautiful with her vibrant green eyes, exquisite silhouette and soft, mottled fur. This portrait, like so many that are painted in memoriam of a beloved furred family member, is particularly special as my client commissioned this the day after losing her precious little Tilly. It was as if my painting contributed to the healing process from such an unexpected heartbreak. You’ll see a tiny little bee in the painting which was a special request; presumably Tilly enjoyed chasing them in the garden!

No matter how many pet portraits I paint, when first viewing my clients' photos, I'm always in awe of the beautiful creatures with whom we are privileged to share this Earth.  Here, this white snowball of fluff, Daisy, is absolutely irresistible . . . just wish I could snuggle kisses in that thick white fur! 

A little postscript...

I just love receiving photos from my clients when they frame and display their paintings, but I've never received one with the model in the pic!  Isn't Daisy just amazingly beautiful...and she's even sitting on the very same rug!  I'm so glad she gave me a "Paws up!" :o)

Two beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniels sit contentedly in my client's gorgeous French shop in Colonial Williamsburg. Her shop is chock full of blue and white porcelain, oil paintings, and sumptuous furnishings including the beautiful velvet tufted ottoman and silk striped French chairs painted a soft, warm white with gilded fleur-de-lis open backs. I just love the deep cranberry pink walls to set off the pine fireplace mantle. Although I'm an 18th century American colonial style gal, I have always loved French style furnishings and interior design in general, so for me this painting was as much an interior scape as it was a pet portrait. Aren't Tucker and Jilly precious just sitting pretty? I must admit, every time I create a new painting it seems to be my "new" favorite and this is no exception.  Not only are Max and Simba sitting perfectly together for a wonderful composition, but they are particularly dramatic with the lighting and the fact that this painting features them lifesized!  I'm still surprised as I study this portrait on my easel.  I'd only painted one other lifesized which was a gorgeous white Poodle named Leo, at the shore (see older posts).  This was a last minute request from a client for a Christmas gift which gave me only a few days to paint it!  Being that I normally paint in thin glazes and the fact that this palette is predominantly earth tones which cover well and dry extremely quickly, I knew I could do it with such a stringent timeframe.  I think I only have two more pet portraits to complete before year end!  Coming next are Leslie's Jilly and Tucker in her beautiful French Shop in Colonial Williamsburg, then white, fluffy Daisy! :o)

...and here's Maggie's new brother, Buster, a Beagle mix who is also a rescued pup!  When you scroll down to see Maggie, you'll realize that it was truly a blessing that Buster was offered for adoption at the same time.  I suspect that Buster helped Maggie recover from her intense fear, and likewise, Maggie must have helped Buster.  Together they are enjoying a new life full of love and security with lots of play time!  They're truly special little pups.  Everytime I've heard of rescued animals being adopted, and from my own personal experiences, it seems they never forget who saved them!  I just love stories like Maggie and Buster with happy endings...or shall I say happy beginnings!

Maggie, a Rat Terrier, was rescued by my client's daughter when she saw a photo of her online.  It was love at first sight!  So, although ill at the time, she hopped on a train and endured the 3+ hour ride to meet Maggie for the first time.  They had another pup there also, just in case she didn't like Maggie.  Well, you can anticipate the happy ending...she took both home right away!  Maggie spent the first week in her new home, huddled in a corner shivering with fear, but as you can see, her recovery is fabulous!  Love conquers all.  Look for her new brother, Buster a Beagle mix, coming up on my blog tomorrow!

A most delightful scene of serenity, a darling black and white English Springer Spaniel sits quite contentedly amidst fresh blue and white floral sheets in a Victorian bed with inlaid floral swags.  I always say it, but as I'm a still life artist first, these extra details in my pet portraits are an extra joy for me while painting!  The moment I saw the photo reference of Finn I knew I had to paint his portrait!
