Here is the final painting. Details that were refined included adding highlights and mauve tones to the thin wash of water on the shore (with long, low shadows one knows it is coming upon sunset when subjects begin to acquire a warmer tinge), warmth and softening to the ocean in the distance, slight reflections beneath the crab, and general softening of the golden shadows within Brittany's fur.

Here is an actual photo of the winning photograph which I currently have in my possession. You can see here how the photo is much richer than the scanned image received via email from River City Westies (above).
"Crab Standoff" 8x10 inches / oil on canvas / Donated to River City Westies
River City Westies recently held their annual Photography Contest fund raising event. I volunteered to contribute one of the three prizes by painting the winning photograph in the Active Westies category, entitled "Crab Standoff" by Barbara Bright. As Barbara says, her ferocious little Westie was caught in a charmingly appealing moment of courage. I will be posting various stages of this painting here for Barbara and you to enjoy viewing as it progresses.

Thank you so much, Barbara! I have been enjoying the process of creating this painting of your charming Brittany for you! Of course your photo reference is marvellous and I can only hope that I do justice to it in my interpretation with canvas and paint. Brittany is an absolutely delightful subject and I can imagine what fun it must have been to watch her in this "Crab Standoff". Jeanne
jeanne, i had to tell you how incredible this painting is..... all of your artwork is breathtaking, but this one grabbed my heart. You have such a gift for capturing the true essence of these precious little babes.
Thank you so much, Jacqui. For the painting, my client (the RCW winner) had requested that I remove Brittany's red harness which meant being extra careful not to lose her particular posture in all that lovely fluffy fur. Can you just imagine watching this adorable scene? Thank you for your lovely comments. Jeanne
What a fantastic painting! It brought an instant smile to my face. The little dog looks completely surprised by the crab...too cute! You're style is so beautiful.
Thank you so much, Gwen! Barbara's little Westie, Brittany, seems to be rather daring herself, but I must say, that little crab is even more daring in the face of such a playful -- and as Barabara says, "ferocious"-- pup! LOL I also thought it would be fun to show the various stages here for Barbara and all of you to follow the development of her new acquisition! Thank you for your lovely comments! Jeanne
